Ignacio Gama won the Uni International Scholarship to study in South Korea.
When you entered Uni did you know there were international programs?
Yes, I found out since I asked for reports to enter the race.
Did you think you would go to live and study abroad?
No, I thought that there were going to be many obstacles and that the competition was going to be strong.
Have you ever lived or studied outside of Mexico before?
No, never.
What prompted or motivated you to study in another country?
To get to know new customs, cultures and meet people from different countries.
Why did you decide to study in that country?
Because it was one of the two countries where I would have to practice my English skills and learn about other cultures.
How did you feel when you arrived in the new country?
I felt nervous, because I was the only Mexican who arrived separately and I had no one to talk to at first, and no one to ask for help if I got lost. But those nerves went away as soon as I left the airport.
How have you been received at the university where you arrived?
Very good. The university helped me since I arrived there, because I arrived there has a volunteer student program called "buddies of Hallym", in which the students of the university help you before you arrive to the country, since they wait for you in the arrival halls of the airport so you don't leave alone, since the university is almost 3 hours away from the airport. They also help you with the loading of your materials and the arrangement of your room.
What will you miss most about Mexico?
The food was what I missed the most, also the warmth of us Mexicans, both friendly countries, but in a different way. I also missed my own room in terms of privacy, as I had never shared a room with anyone else.
What about the Uni?
I didn't miss so many things about Uni since I was sure that I would be back and that not many things would change so radially. What I did miss was being able to talk with the teachers and with my classmates and with the university in general.
What is the most exciting thing you have experienced so far in this experience?
All in all it was an experience that I do not regret, but if I have to choose 3 moments, they would be learning to ski in the snow, traveling to Busan with some friends and being able to go to a friend's farm and being able to spend time with his family and prepare a typical dish called "Kimchi".
And the hardest part?
To say goodbye to all the friends I made throughout the semester, because unfortunately we were all from places that were not 2 hours away. And I don't know when I will be able to see them again.
What do you expect as a person and as a professional from this program?
Growing in both aspects and in being more culturally empathetic. It also gave me a greater sense of competitiveness than we are used to at Uni.
Do you recommend these opportunities provided by Uni to your colleagues?
Of course, experiences like these are unique and I don't think anyone has ever regretted them. From long programs such as Semester Abroad to short programs such as "hands around the world".
Thank you very much!

Gerardo Francisco García is studying Digital Design and was awarded a scholarship to study for a semester at Hallym University in South Korea.
When you entered Uni did you know there were international programs?
I had heard about the programs before, but never in depth, I didn't know how they worked or their international reach.
Did you think you would go to live and study abroad?
Before I started my studies I never thought about it, later during the semesters I thought about it, but I never applied for the different calls for applications.
Have you ever lived or studied outside of Mexico before?
Never.
What prompted or motivated you to study in another country?
On the one hand, I have always been interested in the different cultures of the world, wanting to know and live on the other side of the world. On the other hand, the comments of my classmates who had already participated in these programs helped me to decide to apply for this program.
Why did you decide to study in that country?
I had already heard many things about South Korea, and I already knew about the culture of the country. I took it as the best option because of the cultural differences and the fact that it is completely on the other side of the world.
How did you feel when you arrived in the new country?
Complete amazement and fear, everything I had heard about the country came true. Amazement because everything was new to me, every little detail of Korea made me learn new things. Fear because of the fact that everything was different and it was a little complicated to understand things since most of them were written in Korean.
How have you been received at the university where you arrived?
Hallym University behaved in a spectacular way, the teachers as well as the students in charge of the "Buddy" program facilitate all the procedures that you may need inside and outside the university, always fraternal and kind, offering their help for whatever you may need.
What will you miss most about Mexico?
My family, friends and very important the food. It is well known that Mexican cuisine is one of the richest in the world and it shows when you are on the other side of the world.
What about the Uni?
More than anything my friends, you get used to the people you have been living with for more than 4 years and the absence is noticeable.
What is the most exciting thing you have experienced so far in this experience?
Every day is a new adventure, you never know what might happen, from the various activities that the "Buddy" program has prepared for us to meeting new people that help you grow as a person and as a professional. But if I had to choose I guess it would be the first snowfall of winter, it just happened on the weekend so we were all able to enjoy various outdoor activities.
And the hardest part?
At the beginning I would say that the language, if you went out of the university and you didn't find a person who spoke Korean, everything became a little complicated, the basics of the language you learn with time thanks to the basic Korean class.
What do you expect as a person and as a professional from this program?
I hope to learn and grow in all aspects of life. I am having one of the best experiences of my life and I owe it all to this program and to the University of Celaya.
Do you recommend these opportunities provided by Uni to your colleagues?
Highly recommended to all my fellow students at the University of Celaya, truly.... if you have the possibilities to study in another country I am one hundred percent sure that you will never regret it. You can learn a lot about the country you travel to, the people who live there, the other exchange students and you can even learn something new about yourself.
Thank you very much!

Daniela Montes López, completed a semester of her degree in Communication and Audiovisual Media at Guangdong University thanks to the Uni.
When you entered Uni did you know there were international programs?
Yes, I had been told about it since I entered, but I didn't really understand what it consisted of.
¿Creítion that you will goíAre you planning to live and study abroad?
I did believe it, because it was a goal I had since I started my career, becoming one of my motivations to do my best in my studies .
Have you ever lived or studied outside of Mexico before?
No, never.
What prompted or motivated you to study in another country?
I was motivated to get to know a culture different from my own, to learn a language, and that this language would make me realize that my limitations are in my head and that I am capable of overcoming them. In addition, I knew that being in a different landscape than the one I already knew would allow me to discover skills and aptitudes that I had not noticed before in myself. On the other hand, I wanted to be the one to make my country and university known.
Why did you decide to study in that country?
Because throughout my career I have had to live with Chinese students who go to the university, who told me about their country, leaving me curious to learn about their culture and experience on my own all those social and cultural differences that I knew would help me grow as a person.
How did you feel when you arrived in the new country?
I could not believe that I was on the other side of the world and although from the first moment I could notice the culture shock, without understanding anything of what they were telling me, I was very curious about what could happen. I also felt very happy because I was reaffirming the friendship I created with my Chinese friends I met at UNI in Mexico, who welcomed me at the airport, introducing me to more friends, and without a doubt, Chinese people are very kind people.
How have you been received at the university where you arrived?
They have been very kind and willing to answer any questions, especially the Chinese students who had been at UNI and two students who shared a room with us, thanks to them we were able to enjoy our stay more.
What will you miss most about Mexico?
To my family, friends and Mexican food. I may miss my daily activities in Mexico, but best of all, I am sure I will be very busy capturing every moment in my mind to express it with such excitement to everyone when I return.
What about UNI?
Subjects related to my career, my professors and friends.
What is the most exciting thing you have experienced so far in this experience?
A few weeks after arriving in China, we Mexicans ventured on a trip to the north of the country (Zhangjiajie), we all stayed in the same room, we were just getting to know each other, no one understood any Chinese, to tell the truth, we were new to everything, but that was what made it one of the best trips, we visited places with incredible landscapes, even one day we stayed on a mountain waiting for the sunset, of course, then we had to run down because they were going to close the park. Undoubtedly, the improvised trips are the ones that surprise you.
And the hardest part?
At the beginning I was learning the language, I heard or saw it and did not know how I was going to distinguish the characters and at the same time speak it, but as the days went by I got used to it, until I understood a basic conversation or even to be able to communicate when I needed to. I also got used to the way of payment when buying a product, because here are rare places where they accept cash and everything had to be with a mobile device.
What do you expect as a person and as a professional from this program?
The experience of living abroad allows you to enjoy life without what you are used to, being a challenge, although a great decision, because it strengthens the soft skills and agility of resolution to the challenges that are presented along the way, knowing hidden areas of your person, which help you both personally and professionally, leaving new goals to meet.
Do you recommend these opportunities provided by UNI to your colleagues?
Totally, I believe that living an experience abroad and in particular in China allows you to leave your comfort zone, adapting to new customs and discovering that the biggest limitation is in you.
Thank you very much!
