Sustainable Development Goals Impacted

Introduction

Health is a fundamental human right and indispensable for the exercise of other human rights. Every human being has the right to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health conducive to a life of dignity". Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights OHCHR

The University of Celaya is aware of the importance of guaranteeing people's health and promoting a healthy lifestyle. 

Following this fundamental human right, the School of Medicine of the University of Celaya is developing several projects, among them: 

  1. Medical offices
  2. Medical blog: The challenge for the neuron
  3. Research project: Prevalence of sarcopenia, dinapenia, respiratory restriction and metabolic sequelae in young adults post COVID-19.
  4. Research collaboration with the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute at Drexel University in the United States.

Medical offices

Medical offices is a project under development that consists of offering medical consultation and early detection services open to anyone who comes to request the service.

Medical Blog

Medical Blog is a project under development by teachers and students of the School of Medicine of the University of Celaya, which seeks to provide the student community with accurate and updated information on topics focused on contemporary medicine, mental health, science and technology. 

The objective of the blog is to publish scientific dissemination topics for the student community and the general population. To this end, the students and professors of the School of Medicine seek to encourage interest in medical, technological and scientific advances that regardless of the academic or professional background of our readers have access to a selection of topics that are of interest to their health.

In terms of access and visibility, in the first instance we will work so that this informative content is for students and teaching staff of the University, having as a second phase and depending on the maturity of the same, we will seek to share this content with society in general in a public way on the Internet. 

Research

The research project Prevalence of sarcopenia, dinapenia, respiratory restriction and metabolic sequelae in young adults post COVID-19. is in the development stage and its main objective is to provide useful information on the sequelae shown in post-COVID syndrome in young adults who have suffered from COVID infection.

Currently, this study evaluates:

  • Glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin and hepatic profile studies, in order to detect metabolic alterations. 
  • Respiratory function by means of spirometry tests. 
  • Body composition by evaluating the percentage of fat, muscle and muscle strength of the participants. 

The following are required to participate in this study:

  • A lapse of time of 1 to 3 months after infection with COVID-19.
  • Be a male or female resident of the city of Celaya, Guanajuato.
  • Be between 18 and 50 years of age. 
  • Not having chronic diseases prior to COVID-19 infection or with recent diagnosis not older than 5 years. 
  • No physical activity 
  • Do not consume food supplements.

In addition,the School of Medicine of the University of Celaya collaborates in research projects with the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute of Drexell University in the United States. EMUC Director Dr. Juan Raul Maldonado and Professor Dr. Georgina Perez Liz have participated in the development and validation of an instrument for the diagnosis of autism. This project has also been linked to APAC. Recently the EMUC collaborators have published the following advances of the research project. In addition, the collaboration is still in process to become an application center for the inventory.

 

Impact

These projects are directly focused on meeting Sustainable Development Goal 3. To ensure healthy living and promote wellness for all at all ages, specifically in: 

  • Proportion of health facilities that have a basic package of affordable essential drugs on a sustainable basis.
  • Strengthen the prevention and treatment of substance abuse.
  • Ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health services, including family planning, information and education.
  • Strengthen early warning, risk reduction and management of national and global health risks.
