San Francisco, CA. , Universia and Santander Universities in Mexico continue to be the bridge for the international projection of higher education institutions in our country, managing and leading, for the third consecutive year, the participation of a Mexican delegation of more than 40 leaders of public and private universities in the 98th editionof the Annual Meeting of the American Council on Education (ACE), one of the most important events of higher education in the United States.
Martha Aguilar Trejo, Rector of Universidad de Celaya, attended as part of the delegation invited by Universia and Santander Universities, to participate in the meeting with the aim of generating collaborative ties with American higher education institutions, to provide their students, teachers and researchers, the tools and skills necessary to develop in the global world, responding to the demands of the workplace and technological advances.
The leaders of the universities that were part of this delegation held a meeting to exchange ideas on higher education in which Molly Corbett, President of the American Council on Education (ACE), Arturo Cherbowksi Lask, General Director of Universia and Executive Director of Santander Universities in Mexico, Jaime Valls Esponda, Secretary General of the National Association of Universities and Institutions of Higher Education (ANUIES) and as guest of honor, Carlos Perez-Verdia Canales, Undersecretary for North America, were present.
Arturo Cherbowski, pointed out that "the work that Santander Universities and Universia do through the different international meetings and forums they organize, designed mainly for universities, is to serve as a bridge to create direct links between the leaders of higher education institutions in a more personal and closer way, beyond political and social conflicts".
Molly Corbett recognized the effort made by Santander Universities and Universia to bring Mexican universities closer to U.S. universities, to establish cooperation and create a relationship between them.
For his part, Jaime Valls Esponda thanked the support that Santander Universities and Universia give to higher education institutions in Mexico by bringing them to forums in which, in addition to having the opportunity to work hand in hand with counterparts from other countries, they open the door to one-to-one collaboration ties with institutions that have common goals, allowing them to enhance all efforts for the benefit of their university communities.
The event included the presentation of the Observatory of University Mobility between Mexico and the United States, an initiative of ACE and Santander Universities, whose main objectives are to provide a clearer understanding of the current panorama of the joint activity of universities in both countries, examining student mobility in depth, and translating the results of such research into case studies, analysis and recommendations on internationalization and academic mobility.
With the participation of the partner universities of Santander Universities and Universia, Santander reiterates its commitment to promote the strengthening of a common space for knowledge, where universities play a leading role in helping to build increasingly competitive societies.

Entrevista a Sebastian Quintero, estudiante de Comunicación en la Universidad de Celaya, que realiza una estancia semestral en Bogotá, Colombia.
When you entered Uni did you know there were international programs?
Sí, fue una de las razones que me impulsó también a entrar a la Uni, tenía una idea sobre los programas pero no conocía todas las oportunidades que había.
¿Creíste que te irías a vivir y estudiar en el extranjero en tus primer semestre?
Desde que comencé la carrera recuerdo que le dije a mis papás: «antes de terminar la universidad me voy a ir de intercambio, no sé cómo le voy a hacer ni a dónde me voy a ir pero es una de mis metas»… Y estoy muy contento de haberla conseguido; claro, implicó mucho trabajo y esfuerzo previo pero valió mucho la pena.
¿Ya habías vivido o estudiado fuera de México?
Nunca, tuve en la preparatoria un encuentro de jóvenes a nivel internacional en Guatemala, pero sólo una semana… Nada de vivir o estudiar por mucho tiempo.
¿Que te impulsaba o motivaba para estudiar en otro país?
El hecho de conocer otra cultura, vivir en otra ciudad, conocer otro tipo de gente, de comida, de vida diaria. El ser internacional actualmente te abre muchas puertas laboralmente hablando, sirve mucho en el currículum.
Why did you decide to study in that country?
Porque me daba más facilidades que las otras opciones que conocía.
How did you feel when you arrived in the new country?
Me sentí emocionado pero a la vez nervioso, con miedo e incertidumbre pero con ganas de que empezara mi experiencia.
How have you been received at the university where you arrived?
Desde que llegué al aeropuerto y fueron por mi fueron muy amables, y en la universidad ni se diga, todos han sido muy amables y atentos conmigo, y me han ayudado con las dudas e inquietudes que han ido surgiendo en el camino.
What will you miss most about Mexico?
Los tacos!!! jajajaja a mi familia, a mis amigos y mis clases de diario, pero sé que todo es por un bien mayor.
Las instalaciones, a mis amigos y amigas, a mis profesores, la comida de la cafetería, el teatro, ¡todo!
¿Qué es lo mas emocionante que has vivido hasta ahora en esta experiencia?
A mediados de febrero me invitaron algunos administrativos de la escuela a unirme a un grupo de teatro independiente (mi más grande pasión) para participar en el Festival Iberoamericano de Teatro de Bogotá, el festival de teatro más importante a nivel internacional, con tres funciones de la puesta en escena llamada «El Extraño Jinete» con el papel principal.
Justo cuando llegué me enfermé de amigdalitis, y soy bien miedoso para las enfermedades fuertes y difíciles. Estarme cuidando solo fue un verdadero reto.
What do you expect as a person and as a professional from this program?
Como persona, aprender a independizarme cada vez más, aprender a cuidarme a mí mismo y aprender a administrarme mucho más y mejor, y como profesional pues dejar en alto a mi país y mi universidad, demostrar que los mexicanos somos muy buenos estudiantes y muy dedicados en lo que hacemos.
Do you recommend these opportunities provided by Uni to your colleagues?
Muchísimo, creo que son oportunidades que la vida te da una vez en la vida y hay que saber aprovecharlas en el momento indicado.

En los últimos años, la ciudad de Celaya ha tenido un crecimiento acelerado en el ámbito del Turismo de Reuniones y de Negocios, no obstante nuestra ciudad cuenta con un patrimonio rico y vasto en fiestas y tradiciones que son potencial para el Turismo Religioso, un sector al que no se puso atención por mucho tiempo, pero que en los últimos años ha ido ganando importancia, por dicha razón se realizó un panel con expertos en el tema para los alumnos de las licenciaturas en Turismo y Gastronomía.
Araceli Torres, asesora de promoción turística a nivel estatal, expuso que en el mundo existen al rededor de 330 millones de turistas del sector religioso, 34 millones en México, los cuales gastan entre 120 a 1500 pesos diarios cuando hacen una visita de este tipo. Las visitas religiosas suelen durar más que las de otro tipo de turismo pues se contemplan de 5 a 7 días, por lo que la derrama económica es verdaderamente considerable.
Por turismo religioso se contemplan todas aquellas fiestas, costumbres, tradiciones, peregrinaciones, procesiones que comprenden un tema específico de alguna religión.
Además, el Estado de Guanajuato es rico en este tipo de expresiones, según nos cuenta el presbítero Rogelio Segundo, líder del turismo religioso en la región, ya que tan solo en la Diócesis de Celaya, conformada por 11 municipios, existen celebraciones muy arraigadas que forman parte de la identidad de la región y que conservan la majestuosidad de antaño.
La ciudad de Celaya es ejemplo de esto, ya que durante semana santa, hay días como el jueves santo, donde el centro histórico recibo hasta 1 millón de personas en el centro histórico de la ciudad para realizar la tradicional visita de los 7 templos, además de que en esta ciudad se realiza la segunda procesión del silencio más grande de la República, con casi más de 600 participantes.
Por dichos motivos, es vital reconocer la importancia y el potencial que este tipo de turismo tiene para la región, aprovechando el patrimonio material que tiene la zona ene templos, monasterios, exconventos, obras de arte, así como del inmaterial que se refiere a celebraciones religiosas, que además ocurren todo el año y a veces en lugares simultáneos, permitiendo también mostrar el patrimonio comunitario que se refiere a la gastronomía y artesanías del lugar.
Este tipo de turismo tiene la particularidad de mostrar como ningún otro la historia, el arte y la cultura de las comunidades, además que por su dimensión religiosa, ligada a lo espiritual, permite la transmisión de mensajes ligados a valores, familia y conservación de tradiciones.

El día 12 de marzo asistimos al 9° Foro Nacional de Seguridad, Justicia y Paz en la Universidad Intercontinental, Ciudad de México. El lema de este foro fue “Para Construir la Paz, tanta justicia como sea posible, tanto perdón como sea necesario”. El foro consiste en que personas capacitadas en el área expongan su tema para crear conciencia en todos nosotros y tomar la decisión de hacer un cambio en nuestra escuela, ciudad o comunidad.
Lamentablemente sabemos que la situación actual en nuestro país es severa, con un nivel elevado de violencia y crimen. Existe corrupción y complicidad, en todos los aspectos. Por lo general, los habitantes de este hermoso país buscamos la paz y la tranquilidad para nuestras familias y para nosotros mismos. Es por ello, que es tan importante generar estos espacios para poder discutir estos temas y llegar a una solución en equipo y que mejor manera de llegar a ella con personas especializadas en el tema de seguridad en el país, como lo fue la conferencia de “Interacción Sociedad y Fuerzas Armadas para contribuir a la Paz” expuesta por el Lic. José Carlos Beltrán Benites.
En la mayor parte del foro se habló en que la Paz empieza en nosotros mismos, ¿Cómo podemos esperar paz mundial, si en nosotros mismos no existe? Gracias a un cómico break, de una payasita nos hizo crear conciencia en nosotros mismos sobre esto haciendo una representación de una situación común; al manejar debemos conservar la tranquilidad y paz con los demás automóviles. En situaciones tan pequeñas como esta, debemos de empezar a implementarla. Otro tema que resaltó, es que la cultura de la paz proviene de los valores y educación que empiezan desde nuestros hogares; si es primordial la educación en las escuelas, pero mayormente las situaciones que vemos en casa son las que nos impulsan a actuar en otras situaciones. Una de las pláticas que más nos impactó de manera emocional fue la de la Dra. María de la Luz Lima Malvido, quien es presidenta de la Sociedad Mexicana de Victimo logia e Investigadora del INACIPE. Expuso el tema de “Políticas Publicas de atención a Víctimas”.
Podemos llegar a la conclusión que la cultura de paz empieza desde nuestros hogares, debemos aprender a perdonar, y ser unas personas honestas y así podrá haber verdadera justicia en nuestro país. Nosotros somos las personas del mañana, y en nosotros está el hacer un cambio, debemos tomar acción y hacer conciencia primero en nosotros mismos y después transmitirlo a los demás. Los cambios grandes empiezan en acciones pequeñas.

Uni Ciencia is a magazine that invites to think about the world and its scientific knowledge from different perspectives. A team of students and teachers from the Universidad de Celaya publishes it electronically twice a year.
In the first issue we talked about the science of happiness, altruistic animals and the science that makes you laugh and think at the same time.
In the second one you will learn more about mega-projects to reverse climate change, exoskeletons, tweets to help in natural disaster situations, among other topics.

When I chose South Korea for my exchange I never imagined that I would like it so much. From the moment I arrived at the airport, Hallym University made sure that I arrived safely at my dorm for the next 5 months. The Korean women who picked me up were very kind to me, they invited me to dinner before leaving the airport and taught me some basic words to communicate.
The University of Hallym helps us exchange students by putting a companion or "buddy", I was fortunate to live with Suna Park, who was always attentive to what I needed, she warned me of all the events, not only of the school but of Korea in general, and when we went out to tourist places she taught me the history of each place. Now I have a very nice friendship with her.
I got to know many cultures thanks to the activities organized by the university, since from the first week there were events to get to know the facilities and the other exchange students. There were also several activities where we visited historical places, traditional villages and Buddhist temples. In each activity we ate a traditional Korean dish and they explained how it was made, we learned about the language and interesting things like ordering in a restaurant.
I had the opportunity to meet people from all over the world, I had never had the opportunity to live with Muslims, I learned so much about their religion and their country (Malaysia), now I have very good friendships with them.
I am very happy with my experience at the University of Hallym, because not only the university made an effort to make my stay enjoyable, but also the students who are committed to make every experience of my exchange a very nice memory of their country.
In the end I learned not only about Korean culture, but also about every person from different regions that I met, I learned things about other languages and also taught a little bit of Spanish.
I am very grateful to the University of Celaya for this opportunity, since I was able to get to know and learn about other cultures and share a little bit of Mexico.

Xareni Stephanye González, Architecture student, tells us about her experience starting a semester at the Universidad Francisco de Vitoria in Madrid.
When you entered Uni did you know there were international programs?
Of course! I think that was one of the main reasons why I got into this university.
Did you think you would go live and study abroad in your first semester?
I knew that I could leave on my own until the third semester and to tell the truth from the beginning I believed that I would leave, since the university offers many opportunities to be able to do so.
Have you ever lived or studied outside of Mexico before?
Yes, for a few months and it was an experience I wanted to repeat, as every place has something new to provide.
What prompted or motivated you to study in another country?
It is a dream that I have always wanted, traveling is a very rewarding experience but if at the same time it is combined with studying it becomes more enriching, it motivates me to meet new people, get involved in the culture and open my possibilities of finding work in the future outside my country.
Why did you decide to study in that country?
Because in Spain as well as in Europe there is so much variety and architectural richness, that for my career it is something fundamental to know and being here gives me the possibility to visit the architectural works that in the first semesters of my career I knew.
How did you feel when you arrived in the new country?
A great excitement to know that I was fulfilling a dream I had always wanted, as well as a lot of nerves for everything that was coming, school, new classmates, new teachers, in short, everything would be new.
How have you been received at the university where you arrived?
The Universidad Francisco de Vitoria is a university that has many student exchanges, it made me feel very welcome and the classmates were very kind.
What will you miss most about Mexico?
Without a doubt the food, of course after my family but I know that my family will always be there, I miss the warmth of the Mexicans, only when you are away for so long you realize that you value your country more than you thought.
What about the Uni?
My teachers, my classmates, my friends, the cafeteria.
What is the most exciting thing you have experienced so far in this experience?
Every day is so exciting because I know that I will never again be in these circumstances, in this University, at this age, with these classmates, at this moment I think the best thing of all is to meet people who teach you new things about life.
As well as knowing architectural works, that my knowledge and everything I knew in images becomes so palpable, and is seen in such a different way, because now I can see where the architecture comes from and everything I can build in the future.
And the hardest part?
The hardest thing is not being close to your family at important times.
What do you expect as a person and as a professional from this program?
I look forward to new opportunities to live experiences that bring positive changes in my life, both professionally and personally, that continue to provide this support to my other colleagues.
Do you recommend these opportunities provided by Uni to your colleagues?
Absolutely! I think all students should have an experience like this at least once in their lives.

What prompted or motivated you to study in another country?
The fact of obtaining a global perspective and experience for the enrichment of my academic training and personal experience.
Why did you decide to study in that country?
Because I observed that their academic plan was more in line with what I was looking for. Besides, in Colombia, they welcome foreigners, especially Mexicans.
How did you feel when you arrived in the new country?
Fear, nerves and enthusiasm.
How have you been received at the university where you arrived?
Quite nice. They take care to make sure that students coming from abroad are well taken care of.
What will you miss most about Mexico?
The food and the people I lived with on a daily basis.
The evaluation system.
What is the most exciting thing you have experienced so far in this experience?
Travel and get to know new cities other than Bogota.
Learning to be more responsible not only with my actions towards others, but also for myself. It is also difficult to adapt in such a short period of time to the way of living in another country and to know how to evaluate in exams. I am not referring to the weightings, but to the style of questions. For example: at the University of Celaya, when reading a book, we normally do a general essay or reading report. In Colombia, we are asked specific questions about the reading; we practically have to study the book to be prepared for the evaluation.
What do you expect as a person and as a professional from this program?
Learn that, in difficult situations, it is necessary to adapt to them and excel in a positive way, take into account that each country has its own social problems and identify the differences between one country and another, whether in terms of infrastructure, population behavior, trends, etc.
Do you recommend these opportunities provided by Uni to your colleagues?
Yes, the opportunity of an exchange is a benefit that is not quantitatively calculated.

Por Juan Carlos Gallegos Cárdenas
No sé cómo empezar este reporte, fue una experiencia inigualable desde el momento que me inscribí, algo me dijo que iba a ganar sabía que tenía un gran proyecto y los requerimientos los superaba y obviamente tenía una actitud muy positiva.
En momentos anteriores de mi vida no esperaba un premio por mi esfuerzo, más que todo porque no me esforzaba mucho pero cuando entré a la carrera todo cambió y mi actitud mejoró.
El viaje cambió un montón de paradigmas que tenía sobre la cultura de Estados Unidos. Yo pensaba que los estudiantes eran muy rebeldes y hacían mucho relajo, pero me di cuenta que no es cierto, son personas muy trabajadoras y amables que tienen mucha cultura y que siempre dan su mejor esfuerzo. Claro que como en todo hay excepciones pero en general fui con una idea y todo ese concepto cambió, yo sabía que esta experiencia me iba a gustar pero terminé realmente enamorado y con una motivación grande de seguir estudiando, porque quizá tarde o temprano tu esfuerzo te dará una recompensa.
Tengo muchas ganas de seguir dando todo por el estudio, por tener una vida mejor y por ser feliz. Aprendí a no hacer prejuicios y entender una manera de pensar diferente.
Quiero agradecer a la escuela por la gran experiencia que me ha dado, cambió mi vida y como no estar orgulloso de ser la imagen de la escuela en el extranjero, yo estaría feliz por participar en otro proyecto como este y estoy muy ansioso por irme a estudiar un semestre con los convenios internacionales que tiene la escuela.
