Introduction

The covid-19 vaccination process in Mexico was presented as a slow and complicated process. In 2021, many Mexican states were already completing the vaccination phases for older adults when in the state of Guanajuato the vaccines had not yet been received by the Federal Government.

As an initiative of the University of Celaya to expedite the vaccination process as soon as possible, arrangements were made to use the University's facilities as a vaccination center for older adults in the city of Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico.

Carried out in the months of March and April 2021. A total of 15,280 vaccines were administered during the 3 days of the vaccination campaign. A total of 429 volunteers, including students, professors, graduates, academic directors, administrative and operational personnel, made possible a well-executed logistical work.

In addition to these participants, government personnel such as nurses and health sector personnel, elements of the national guard, national officials, etc., were received and provided with the necessary support to carry out the vaccination campaign.

Vaccination process

The vaccination process carried out at the facilities was as follows:

Beginning with 2 reception and document review filters, the seniors were admitted through the pedestrian entrance located in the university's gastronomy faculty building, after passing this review filter the seniors were allowed to enter the facilities in groups of people. These groups were accommodated in a roofed outdoor esplanade with enough chairs, in order to fill out the corresponding data for the application of the covid-19 vaccine, this being the second filter.

In this process there were volunteers helping with the registrations, the volunteers filled out the registrations of the older adults and helped them to position themselves in the esplanade where the vaccines were administered.

After the vaccinations, the seniors were observed in a waiting area in the vaccination esplanade, where they waited for 15 to 20 minutes as an observation process by doctors and nurses. After this process, the seniors were guided to the exit of the facilities, concluding their vaccination process.

Prevention and service

Given that the vaccinated population was senior citizens, the university adapted the logistics and facilities particularly to facilitate the vaccination process for the elderly, in addition to acquiring wheelchairs and support equipment for any citizen who needed it during the vaccination process.

In the case of people with motor limitations or disabilities, they were given passes and were taken in wheelchairs directly to the document review and then to the vaccine administration.

For those who could not get out of their cars due to any other major physical limitation, the screening and vaccination process took place in the university parking lot without the need for the seniors to get out of their cars. They received their vaccinations right there without getting out of their vehicles.

Conclusions

This vaccination campaign was a success thanks to the support and participation of volunteers in the execution and control of logistics. Each of the participating members gave their full support and showed great commitment to the adult society. The cause itself provoked in each participating member a sense of responsibility and motivation that left a positive impact on the older adults.

Below is the following testimony: Carol Diaz, member organizer of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign at the University of Celaya.

"The people who came to get vaccinated left very grateful, there were people who brought gifts for the volunteers and most of the seniors who got vaccinated told us that the waiting times were very short and that the attention and logistics were excellent. It is very gratifying to see that all our work paid off and that the seniors of this society were vaccinated quickly, safely and comfortably. To have a senior citizen and his or her family thank you for the support you gave them at a time like this is something that leaves a mark for life.
